    an album by
    LULACRUZA

A traveling visual album that lies
    in between music and cinema.

Esperando el Tsunami (Waiting for the Tsunami) is a quest for the sounds and people of present-day Colombia,
in a continuous improvisation by the filmmaker and musicians as we composed and created on the road.

Esperando el Tsunami is a collaboration between French filmmaker Vincent Moon (vincentmoon.com) and the Argentinean-Colombian duo Lulacruza (lulacruza.com). The project documents a series of travels through Colombia while listening to the voices of the land and its people.

We traveled with Andrés Velasquez -sound recording engineer- and met with local folkloric musicians on the road, making new music inspired by the sounds of each place. Our collaborators in the different regions included the voices of nature, as well as some of Colombia’s finest magician-musicians:
Teto Ocampo, Rocio Medina, Urian Sarmiento, Bahia Trio, Aterciopelados, Son Palenque, Luis Towers, Sexteto Tabalá, Sixto “Paito” Salgado, Baudilio Cuama, Frente Cumbiero Transnacional and many others… Visit the OUTTAKES page to meet them.

This project was possible thanks to the generous support of many people all over the world who donated their time, money and creative energies -see the CREDITS. We fundraised over the internet, weaving a network of creativity, reciprocity and trust. To learn more about our online fundraising campaign, visit lulacruza.com/colombia

    on the field

Colombia is one of the most biodiverse countries in the world, and its culture is equally rich and lively. Between March and May 2011 we traveled by bus, boat, airplane, foot and donkey, searching for the roots of the local folk sounds, in a quest for the hidden and diverse voices of each place.

The territory we covered was relatively small -it would take a lifetime to discover the country in its entirety!, but we visited some essential places in the cultural landscape: the ancient Muisca territory of Cota and Juaica; the marimba and flute-filled rivers in the Pacific rainforest; the sacred Sierra Nevada and Tayrona beaches on the Caribbean coast; the urban hoods of Cali, Buenaventura, Bogotá, Santa Marta and Cartagena; the Wayuu people’s desert of La Guajira; and Palenque, the mystical heart of Afro-Colombia.
Read the blog of our travels.

We listened to the voices of the oceans and mountains, the voices of birds, insects, rocks, trees and wind. We entered silently, and listened deeply for the voices of the land, the ancestral lines that run latent through the territory and dialogued with them, in resonance, creating new music and images from our encounters.

    sharing!

We are aware that the survival of ALL life on this planet depends on us humans remembering that we have the capacity to co-create with all living forms, and that we must do so, recognizing interdependency… Thus, we have chosen to use the tools that are available today to create interdependently as best as we can:

We used the internet to gather resources for the project by fundraising publicly, also expanding our creative network. Now, when its time to share the fruits of our work, we encourage people anywhere in the world to participate:

There will be Private-Public Screenings of the movie (starting in November 2011); as well as Private-Public Concerts of Lulacruza happening worldwide (starting in March 2012). You can host or attend a screening of the movie, listen to the album, watch the outtakes; and see Lulacruza live by hosting or attending a concert.

All content produced through this project will be shared for FREE under a Creative Commons license.

Lulacruza travel across Colombia to take the country’s musical nectar and transform it into their almost shamanic trance sessions,
Moon follows closely with his sensuous-seeking camera and responsive musicianship…”

…It is not evident, but there are memories kept and still vibrating in places.
    They are not forgotten, they remain hidden in a few trees;
the rocks and the changing wind whisper them…
